We found The Salutation in Sandwich (Kent, England) via the FurtherAfield.com site that has listings of beautiful, up market B&Bs and boutique hotels. In addition, the properties they list are also gay friendly for people seeking that reassurance as well.
And what a great find the property was! We really loved the place, the welcome and the service.
The property has over the last years been renovated and restored, which includes the buildings as well as the stunning gardens, with style and flair.
The Salutation is located in the heart of Sandwich near to the river, but is quiet and secluded at the same time. Within the property is the main house, where you have breakfast and the owners live. Then there is the Knightrider House (where we stayed) which has a number of rooms but also has a lounge, dining room and kitchen. So you can either take the whole place with a group or take individual rooms. There is then also 2 other buildings with accommodation, and again you can take the whole place or rooms within them.
The Knightrider House was fantastic. We were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves as we were there out of a busy period. We stayed in the St George room on the 1st floor, which was huge with a massive and very comfortable bed and en suite bathroom. In the lounge there are comfy sofas and a bar with drinks and mixers that are included in the price. We ended up using the kitchen a few times, which was also great. It may be a bit uncomfortable if there are a number of different people staying in the various rooms who do not know each other on quite how to interact and use the lounge, dining room and kitchen.
You can enter the gardens from the Knightrider House. The gardens are amazing, and in Summer a popular place for tourists to visit and so there is a tea room and gift shop also open on the property in season.
The hosts were so friendly and helpful. The breakfast was served in a magnificent room in the main house and was extensive and tasty.
